Beach House

THE DEVELOPMENT

The 350m2 site in Oceanview Road, Mount Maunganui (Maoao in Maori), is a short walk to the finest golden sand and surfing beaches in New Zealand, the safe sheltered Tauranga Harbour, working Port and The Mount Retail and Entertainment Precinct. The site is flat with breathtaking views of The Mount which is an extinct volcanic cone that towers majestically out of the sea. The Client Brief was to design a 3 Bedroom Home with a contemporary modern aesthetic. The total floor area of 315m2 consists of the Main Bedroom with Ensuite and Double Shower, 2 Bedrooms and Study, Open Plan Living, Dining and Kitchen, Games Room with Pool Table connected to a Double Garage and Outdoor Decks. The Client is a well respected and established Family in Tauranga.

ARCHITECT'S DESIGN

The Bridge type Entry is defined by a reflective Water Pool and black oxide tinted Honed Precast Concrete Panel on axis with another reflective pool on the opposite end of the House giving the feeling of the Home floating on water. The Main Staircase is clad in a metallic grey to recall glistening beach sand. The Main Stair towers into the sky to provide vertical emphasis and scale to the House, take advantage of views of The Mount from the landings and triple volume space, as well as allowing North light into the House. The Main Bedroom with Private Deck, Staircase Landing and Middle Floor Bedroom are orientated to take advantage of views of The Mount. The building maximises the Town planning development envelope to gain as much space as possible. The stepped form of the building and its crisp white colour are reminiscent of Sandcastles on the Beach, whimsical and playful but bold and confident. The reflective pools are like scoops in the sand allowing the tide to be caught momentarily before disappearing into the sand.

PROJECT STATUS

The project was completed October 2008 on budget and on time.
