Pirongia Mountain View House
DEVELOPMENT: A neo-modern 4 Bedroom House - 211m2 with a 76m2 Triple Garage. The development is close to the Base Shopping Complex, Hamilton CBD, Wintec, Schools and Hamilton. There are bus stops adjacent.
SITE: The 550m2 site is elevated with breathtaking views of Pirongia Mountain. There is a 5m fall from the back boundary to the front boundary on Farnborough Drive.
CONCEPT: The layout of the House on the site takes full advantage of the elevated site, North light and the Mountain views by setting up the Main Entry Foyer and Upper Floor Living orientated towards these. Passive solar design in the Entry Foyer double volume extensively glazed space provides a heat trap for the sun during winter and cools the house in summer by high level openable windows creating a Venturi Effect natural airconditioning exhaust ventilation. The use of South Island Schist stone juxtaposed against a brightly coloured painted feature wall adds a dynamic, contemporary flair to the Home. The Upper Living Floor is pulled towards the views to open up a large backyard which is private and North facing. The Living Floor has transparency and openness with good natural light and ventilation. A slatted cedar timber screen on the West side of the backyard provides privacy and weather protection to alfresco dining area. The Bedroom Floor takes advantage of the Mountain Views with top hung windows for natural ventilation. The Basement has a double garage, boat storage and rumpus room/office.
ARCHITECTURE: The architecture is contemporary and neo-modern with clean, clear lines and forms, creating an elegant simplicity. The open plan spaces allow flexibility and connectivity. The double volume Entry Foyer and Grand Entry Stair give the House a grand and elevated presence. BUILDING MATERIALS: Schist stone feature walls and fireplace and Graphex Solid insulated plaster system exterior cladding. Stained cedar timber sectional garage door and privacy screens for the backyard. The hardwood Greenheart decks maximise Mountain views from the Bedroom Floor. Anodised aluminium joinery and double glazing are utilised for thermal comfort and durability. A profiled metal roof is orientated towards North so that it can be retro fitted with Solar Panels.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN ELEMENTS: The Architect would like to integrate BIPVT Building Integrated Photovoltaic Thermal (combining Solar Hot Water, Electricity production through Photovoltaics and Rainwater Harvesting/Storage), Grass Turf Roofs and Greywater flush/recycling. North Orientation is maximised for natural light. The design allows for outdoor decks and large sliding doors/windows for maximising natural cross flow ventilation and natural light.
