Tainui Ablution Block
THE DEVELOPMENT
A new Ablution Block with Male and Female Toilets, Parents Room, Utilities Room and Accesible facilities catering for 200 people at a time for Tainui at Tepapaorotu Marae in Maori Point Road - Whatawhata.
ARCHITECT'S DESIGN
The design concept draws on the Maori Heritage of weaving patterns and bold use of red, black and white by alternating, stepped blockwork in different colour and texture. There is rainwater harvesting and future possibility to retrofit Solar Hot Water and Photovoltaics. There is a sophisticated new wastewater treatment plant and the specification of modern sanitaryware and tapware. An enclosed verandah space, heated and well lit, provides a comfortable arrival and breakout space adjacent to the Ablution Block. Sliding Doors provide natural ventilation. New verandahs provide good connectivity between previously isolated and separated buildings on the complex. Design Engine Architects have found working with the Marae design committee a stimulating and rewarding process. We look forward to the successful realisation of this project, bringing vastly enhanced ablutions and services to the Marae.
